RIVERWALK / RIJEKAWALK RIVERWALK / RIJEKAWALK

Walking as an artistic practice and method / A travel workshop with Roswitha Schuller

Roswitha Schuller Künstlerin, Wien

In collaboration with Nadija Mustapic & the class of spatial strategies at the Academy of Applied Arts / University of Rijeka

Walking is a socio-cultural practice that has been documented in various artistic and theoretical fields in a variety of ways. From Walter Benjamin's flâneur and the feminist practice of the flâneuse, from questions of cultural landscape studies to the relationship between idyll and wasteland (keyword ‘vernacular’ landscape), from British ‘strollology’ to recent artistic-research approaches.

A river called Rječina (which translates 'The Big River') flows though the center of the Croatian Harbour city called Rijeka (which itself means: river). Its bed is 5 km long, as it unnoticably flows through the canions, buildings, abandoned industrial complexes, parking lots… It used to play a key role in the development of the city. Today, remnents of the utilitary past are in contrast with the contemporary lack of ability to concieve an (urban) life by the river.
How can a river become alive? Can it become a gathering point – of people, flora and fauna? How can RIVERWALK activate the space on the riverflow? The aim of the workshop is both to get to know these theories and practices in an overview and to develop one's own methods of walking, of narrating about and with walking, as well as of moving narration and design. These methodologies will include individual and dialogical approaches and will incorporate different communication channels, such as social media.
